Forum Acusticum Euronoise 2025

EEA Summer School

The EAA Summer School will take place from Saturday, June 21, until Sunday, June 22, 2025, preceding the Forum Acusticum Conference (FA2025) at the facilities of the Universidad de Málaga, Spain.

The Summer School is chaired by Belén Casla-Herguedas (Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja-CSIC, Spain), Laura Estévez-Mauriz (Universidad de León, Spain), and María Ángeles Navacerrada-Saturio (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain).

The school is composed of several lecture modules, and students can enroll in one of them.

Highlights:

  • The lecture module "Fundamentals in Acoustics" will be taught oriented towards undergraduate students, young researchers, and professionals who are non-expert in acoustics. The registration fee is 50 €.
  • Lecture modules on specific hot topics will run in parallel. PhD students, young researchers, professionals, and graduated students will have the opportunity to attend one of the hot topic modules, taught by international experts. The registration fee is 100 €.
  • An evaluation test is scheduled as part of each module. By completing the full course and passing the evaluation, students can earn 1 ECTS credit.

Detailed information:

  • The lecture module "Fundamentals in Acoustics" and the Hot Topics will run in parallel and have the same duration. It is important to note that they will be taught in parallel, so attendees should register only for a specific Hot Topic according to their interests.
  • Each course has limited places (100 places for the Fundamentals in Acoustics and 25 places for each Hot Topic).
  • Lunch and coffee breaks are included in the course fee for all participants.
  • To facilitate attendance at the Summer School, the organization will offer participants the option to stay in student residences at the University of Málaga at competitive prices.
  • The grants to be awarded will be Free Registration for 10 winners for each Hot Topic and for 25 winners for the Fundamentals Topic.

Summer School registration is open. Please follow this link

Dive into the fascinating interplay between sound, human perception, and acoustics in this Hot Topic. Key aspects include:

Acoustics and Perception: Understand the fundamentals of why psychoacoustics, and in particular perceptual assessments, are necessary in everyday acoustics.

Perceptual Auditory Tests: Learn about the robust and bias-free design, performance, and analysis of listening tests to evaluate sound perception under controlled acoustic conditions.

Applications in Acoustic Engineering: Explore perception-driven approaches to noise challenges in areas such as drones, electric vehicles, machinery (such as heat pumps), soundscapes, and building and room acoustics.

Theoretical knowledge will be enriched with hands-on practical exercises, giving participants tools to bridge theoretical fundamentals and real-life applications. By the end, it is expected you to be equipped to apply perceptual assessment techniques to a wide range of acoustic challenges and contribute to innovative solutions in the field.

This summer school explores the critical link between the urban sound environment and health, including how the short term physiological and psychological effects of sound can lead to chronic diseases. Participants will gain insights into spatial planning and noise mapping, health risk assessment, interpreting epidemiological study findings, the difference between association and causation, and how to convert health risks into economic costs. In a practical session we will explore how these studies can be translated into policies and inform decisions at a local level. By the end, you’ll leave with strategies to enhance the impact of your research and a deeper understanding of the role of environmental sound in urban health.

Organizer: Laura Estévez-Mauriz and Martin Röösli

Lecturers: Martin Röösli, Benjamin Fenech, Efstathios Margaritis, Laura Estévez-Mauriz.
